This blue lobster http://www.tropicalfish4u.co.uk/acatalog/Blue_Lobster.html is it compatible in a community fish tank?

I've got a 48"X20"X18" tank and i'm going to be putting in fish such as angels, kulhi loaches, bolivian rams, glass catfish, rasboras, dwarf gouramis and tetras in the tank.

According to the website above it is a peaceful invertebrate and it says it does not really bother other fish.

I would just like to know if i could have one as i find them interesting and it would be nice to have something different.

Thanks....

well yes and no!!! it is possible to keep Cray in a community. but there is more to it than that. the age and maturity of the tank and fish, and the maturity and disposition of the Cray have an effect too. i have posted a thread about my thoughts on Crayfish in the community. if you do a search under my name you will find it. give it a good read and post again if you are still up for it. I and others will give you all the help you could wish for.

ps the picture in the ad is not a Redclaw Cherax quadricarinatus, it is in fact a Yabbie Cherax destructor, i think. they are not that alike. again a search under my name will find you some pictures of a Redclaw.

Thanks for your reply, i read your post regarding the lobster it was interesting.

Well i'm only just starting to cycle my tank so i wont be able to have one just yet but i am very interested in getting one providing they are not too difficult to care for, I'd be worried about it escaping more than anything :D

I'd like to get one and see if it works out being in a community tank if not i can always take it back to the fish shop.

Cheers...

Well, having had my generic cray in my tank for a few months...I can say only that some of them can handle it...some can't. :) They might eat everything or nothing, as mine has done. :D

I would think, and I would do it this way were I able, that you should get the lobster first, and then add a couple of cheaper fish and see what it does. Worse comes to worse, you put a few fish and they disappear...But, then...I like more of an interesting tank with crays and some "feeder fish" I'll put anything in my tank at this point and if it lives...I know my cray won't eat more of them. LOL

I know for a fact that crabs kill slow moving animals and bottom dwellers such as your khuli loaches so i wouldnt risk it with a lobster

well my bet is even if the Cray does take fish, its likly that if you have space, it will end up in its own tank! they really get under your skin.

let us know how you and the tank get on!!!!

Yeah...I'll go with that one. :D I have really fallen for my little girl. I have, completely, changed my 55 gallon tank from a saltwater to a fresh..all for her. LOL So, yeah...they'll get under your skin, in your heart. I can't wait to watch her in the new tank. In fact, I'm putting in glass hides, so I can still what she's doing. ;)

lol nice move! takes a bit of getting used to though. to see your Cray in all its positions, as it chills. can be a bit un nerving. the Cray normally does that inside its cave, where you cant see it. i still find it a shock to see my Cray on its back, just waving its legs. and have lost count of the number of people who say they "think there is something wrong ". its all cool, just takes getting used to.
