10 gallon US tank. Using a full plastic hood which was given to me. My question has to do with the fact that there is no barrier between the open water and the light bulbs above it. Picture of the tank with the hood on:

Lifting off the hood to show you the surface which is hanging above the water:

Is this a common set-up, or is there something I can do to make sure that the hood does not fall into the water? I am aware of a glass canopy for sale here. Should I get this and place my hood on top of it? Or are there other hoods I can upgrade to that are safer?

What should I do? Thanks.

Don't count me on this one but as far as I can tell they just look like incandescent bulbs, for which you are suppose to use an evaporation cover to prevent water evaporating onto the bulbs.

I don't entirely know for what reason it is necessary... electrical issue? Potential for thermal shock etc? I'm not sure but if it is a incandescent bulb I would recommend getting an evaporation cover, you can always resort to some very thin perspex or similar product rather than a specific one (if you could find one anyway).

If it ain't the above type of bulb, perhaps even LED then I would say nothing to worry about really. Especially if you bought the tank new. My Betta tank was bought 2nd hand and that came with an evap cover but I replaced the bulbs right away.

It is not at all unusual to have a 10 gallon tank with no barrier between the light fixture and the tank's water. I have had both good and bad results from operating that kind of system in my home. In my case I observed that a screw in fluorescent tube, you know those high energy efficiency ones, gave me good results. On the other hand, I have had far less than satisfactory results from using other tubes in my light fixtures. If you use a light fixture that is rated as just marginally acceptable for your situation, keep a close eye on the results. Things may or may not be good for you.
