Hi,

I've noticed for a while that Barney has some grey, slightly raised markings on one side of his face but it now appears to be a bit larger, although still only on one side.

Reading some forum posts, I've heard that columnaris can manifest itself as grey lumps on the head and body

I know the picture isn't that clear (the bugger won't stay still for very long when I get the camera out), but could anyone give me their opinion? Is it columnaris, do you think?

Any help much appreciated.

TT.

I am not sure. Since you have not had a response, you might want to try the emergency forum. Please, keep this thread updated. I may have seen this symptom and would like to know.

I cant help sorry , but it will put thread back to top and I am sure someone will help you! :good:

Hello,

I noticed your picture of Barney below. And although I'm not 100% sure it doesn't look like Columnaris to me.

Betta Talk has a very good site with pictures of fish diseases, so you probably would be best to look here:

Betta Diseases

From looking at those pictures, and looking at your fish it looks like a Fungal Infection. Columnaris would look more string like....let me see if I can locate an example. Found one. Granted this is very advanced (in fact if this fish is still alive I'd be shocked but this is sorta what it looks like:

(Linking it because the picture is not very pleasent) Basically it would look like he had bits of cotton fuzz hanging all over him...

I hope this helps!! Good Luck :good:

Columnaris tends to spread rapidly and usually causes massive ulcerations or death in anything from a matter of hours to a matter of days. It is vicious, rotten stuff, and if he had it, I reckon he'd have passed by now.
Its a little hard to tell from the pic, but I'd agree that it could be fungus if he ever had a wound there, which seems possible since you said he's had the patch for a while and scales take a long time to heal. It could also be a protozoal infection, which manifests as a sort of white-grey slime. Either way, something ain't quite right with those scales for sure, so def. check out that link, and for now maybe add a bit of aquarium salt and BWE.

Ravenwing, thanks for the info. I think you're right. The pic on BettaTalk that illustrates fungal infection looks very similar to what Barney has, and would also explain why he seems fairly unaffected in his behaviour, rather than something more life threatening.

Can anyone recommend a good med in the UK that is pretty good at clearing up fungal infections?

Many thanks,

TT.
