My sister bought yet another betta and it didn't like its tankmates...

I cant tell if it's a sickly male or a long fined / mild female

I just noticed blue in there. :kana:

Well i did a test today to see what my beta bill would do if it was in the tank with him. He just looked at it and left it alone and it did the same. So i don't know if its a male of female.

I hope someone could tell me.

i thought that males cant be together

these 2 didnt do anything when i put them together (1 was in a net)

No, the can NOT be together. You might want to have him in his own place without other bettas swimming around.

they have separate places. Ones in a 29 gal. The other is in a half gal. talk for now till i get a 10 gal. for it.

there are not long finned females...yet.
its definately not a good idea to "test" if it is a male or female though...

I agree that it's a male, but I think you jsut have odd bettas. Regerdless of whether it was male or female, they other male should have has a pretty strong reaction.

Lol, that's almost how my first betta looked, (mine had a spade tail) and the store guy told me it was a female, so that's what I thought it was. I only found out after I bought another male and put their tanks next to each other, they both freaked.

According to bettatalk, it really does depend on the strain and temperment of the fish. Some males can be together, though not recommended that you do this. Quote below:

Variations in aggressive behavior. Some strain are noticeably more aggressive than others, and even the females are nasty to each other. Some strains are more peaceful and can sometimes be kept in groups. A breeder friend of mine was marveling at my large 60 gal community tank, housing about 40 adult bettas, mostly females but also three large males. He couldn’t believe they weren’t killing each other! These bettas were all from the same spawn and knew each other. This strain was a more gentle strain and it was a treat for the eye to see all these bright red and pink bettas swimming in harmony together. (Please do NOT try this at home! :) ).

I once put a male and a female Betta together and the female tore up the male one night, and we had to remove him to a separate bowl. This same female later attacked my African Dwarf Frog and not just attacked it, but stalked it in a much bigger tank, and we had to keep this Betta in her own separate bowl from that point on. That quickly changed my mind about placing any kind of Betta into community tank or with anything else for that matter. :-(

Not to hijack, but what are the more aggresive or more peaceful types? do they say which ones are what?
