The guide to fishless cycling says that if the ingredient list contains surfactants you don't want it, but if there's no ingredient list you can shake the bottle and if no foamy bubbles appear then its ok. I found ammonia that lists ammonium hydroxide and a surfactent as the ingredients, but when I shake it no foamy bubbles appear. I've checked every drug store in the area and can't find anything better and I'm kind of running out of options. Would this ammonia possibly be okay? Its the Wal-mart great value clear ammonia, if that helps.

I would say there has to be someone with pure ammonia. But, I would say as long as it does not have odor or color it might be ok. I'd still wait for other responses but I find it hard to believe not even a grocer near you has pure ammonia.

If you're worried, use ut then when the time comes to add fish, do a 100% water change. Or if it's too big a tank to do that, use a smaller tank.

True, you will do a 90 to 100% water change when your done with your cycle to remove the nitrates anyways so don't worry too much....
