is this a safe sand substrate ?

So i just received a 50# bag of sand from work and would like to use as substrate
but reading the bag im not sure it is safe!! below is the info if anyone could help i would be eternaly greatfull.

ASTM 20-30 sand.
ASTM designation C778

(Hazard warning: containes crystalline silica dust) :dunno:

Sounds like standard silica sand. What's it normally used for, cement? sand blasting?
 
Take it out back and hose it in a bucket (pretend you're "washing the rice" until the water is clear) that is if it looks like beach sand. If it's for cement or blasting application it wouldn't be treated just graded and bagged. As for the warning lable it's to cover their butt I'm just waiting for the day Almond-Joy gets one of those :rofl:.

One thing I almost forgot if it's light enough (as in able to float) you'll have problems in all your power goodies (sucking in and beating the crap out of impellers) and if you still use Under Gravel Filter it'll make it useless. Reminds me of the time I set up a "flounder" tank with beach sand it was great. Also it was easy on the skin of tire track eels and other sand dwellers. Only down side if they burrowed you never seen them unless you dragged a stick in the sand and disturbed them.
