This is an excerpt from a website, talking about bettas:

Alternatively, if the fish is kept alone, the chances are that is going to end up fighting its own reflection on the glass tank until it becomes a stereotypia. The following comment in one of the online fish care forums illustrates this problem:

"He's thoroughly miserable. Something I'd not considered before upgrading him (as there is NO literature on this) is that he can apparently see his reflection in the side of the tank. He spends his days and nights running along the bottom toward the corner of the tank. He won't eat, his fins are clamped, and when taking a break, he hangs in the water at an axis, not on his usual happy horizontal."

I plan on getting 1 male betta, so what should I do to prevent this?

Also, does Wal-Mart have the lowest priced bettas? Thanks in advance!

Walmart is pretty cheap.. like $3.50, same for Petco and PetSmart.
As for your new fishy...I have 5 Bettas and they are not bored or clampy. Even when they can't see each other and even when I only had 1 he entertained himself. As long as they have room to swim and a plant or 2 to play and hide in and you feed him good, he will be happy and so will you!

If his fins are clamped it's a sign of stress, what are your stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph, what size bowl is he in gallons, what do you feed the fish, any sign of being bloated, is he flicking and rubbing on objects, what does it look like when the fish goes to the toilet.

I have a couple of bettas that are by themselves, they are happy. Betta fish are people fish, they want to be where the action is. They can be perfectly happy with just you as a friend. Good luck on the fish finding!
