.... a small, vividly-coloured cichlid that likes hard alkaline water? Having seen various members' tanks with GBRs, Cockatoo, etc., and frankly I WANT ONE LIKE THAT!!!!! But my tank has a pH of 7.8, and all those bright colourful ones seem to like acidic.

how big is your tank? African cichlids offer a very colourful alternative, probably more so in fact.

im no cichlid expert, but i would try whatever fish you want. If you acclimatise [sp] the fish properly, over a long enough period (try the drip technique) i would think they would be OK

although many fish that 'prefer' acidic conditions can be kept in more alkaline water, fish like GBRs are notoriously sensitive/fragile and are unlikely to thrive or have long lives in less than optimum conditions.

The tank is a 65l.

I'm just considering a few options at the moment, since my Siamese Fighter died a couple of days ago, I would like a new "WOW" fish or two.

The Apistogramma Hongsloi or Panduro are nice dwarf cichlids :good:

65L is too small for African cichlids (that I know of). How about a male dwarf gourami?

According to Tropical Fish Finder, both require acidic water.

although that is their natural habitat there may be examples of them being successfully kept in alkaline water. Try posting in the New World Cichlids forum with a list of fish you'd like to keep. See if anyone has had success keeping them in higer pH.

Thanks, will do. BTW, Gourami have never really floated my boat, don't know why.

My cockatoo cichlids are in a tank with PH currently settled at 7.4, they don't seem to care one bit..

I'm keeping apistogramma caratuoides double red at a Ph of 8. No problem. These were tank bred. Usually tank bred fish can stand a wider range of Ph than their natural counterparts. Not always, depending on the species, but often.

if you can find a breeder local to you then you shouldn't have any problems as the fish would of been bred in similar water
