Hi, i was just wondering if there would be a point for me making a 55 gallon aquarium. I would like to know if the total cost would come to less than $100 as if it does not, i don't see a reason for me to build it myself.

im not too sure but the thing is when you buy a 55 gallon tank, ur sure it wont fall apart and they usually have guarantee's and also its not really time consuming.

and when ur building ur own its a hassel to get the materials and etc.

just my 2cents though :dunno:

There is no way to build one for less then $100. My 22 gallon cost $70 for just the acrylic alone..doesn't even count the supplies to put it together.

Glass is even more expensive, and harder to work with.

The 2 most common tanks sold in the U.S. are 55's & 10's. Unless you are building an odd size or very large tank it is usually cheaper to buy them.

Being a common tank it shouldn't be too hard to find a used one. Check http://www.aquabid.com/ local papers, or garage sales. I don't pay more than half retail for used equipment.

A NEW 55 gallon at our lfs is only $74. I got one at a yard sale for $20.

I just got a 29 set up complete with hood, decorations, filters, stand, tank, and chemicals/food for $80 at a yard sale.

Browse Garf for construction ideas. Be aware that many people here believe that Garf uses thinner glass then is truly advisable - I am one such.

Reasons to continue thinking about building your own tank at that size are a) availability of large ammounts of cheap materials, and b) the desire to build and a free budget.

If either a or b applies, then go for it.

I got my 55 gallong off of a recicling website here in the US called FreeCycle.org. Basically people post stuff they don't want anymore and don't wanna throw away and if u want it u pick it up. So my 55 was cost-free! Included a stand and a filter.

My aunt started Toledo Freecycle around here ^_^ There must be over 2000 members... I could easily get a tank from my freecycle, if I didn't WANT to get a brand new one.... It's bea great idea to check and see if you have a local freecycle.

Fot those of you who live in the US, check craigslist.org. I got several free tanks there. Basically a famili is done with this hobby and wants someone to houl all the stuff away for free.

Yeah, craigslist.com is cool. You have to be pretty quick though, stuff gets snagged up pretty quickly. Unlike ebay.com you don't bid on it, it's a classifieds site, and there's plenty of bargains to score.

Chck out www.craigslist.com and then check under pets there is a group inOntario . I have 4 tanks and my 2 largest came t hru there a 55 for 100 dollars brand new never used hood, and pedestal blond wood, and a 37.5 Eclipse for a 100 as well and I am waiting on a 60 gallon with a pedestal for free without a hood or any of the equipment which is way more than worth it. It is worth checking for sure. Also your LFS is a great place to get good prices on used tanks if you have a good rapport with the owners. Sandi
