Hi guys

Erm... Not quite so much an emergency, but I'm quite excited and panicky...

I've always been told amanos can only breed in brackish water. I have NEVER added salt to my tank. Yet I just got in and looked in my tank and there are not 1, but 3 (yes THREE) heavily laden amanos in my tank... I know its definitely eggs because I'm used to seeing my cherries with eggs, but because the amanos are HUGE its so much easier to see....

Can this really be happening? I bought a new mini tank today to move my shrimp to, but now I'm panicking because I dont want to disturb them and make them drop their eggs. But the shrimp NEED to be moved... What can I do?

IIRC it's more that the zoes can only survive a very short time in fresh water and then need to travel to brackish water to survive, as in their natural habitat they get swept downstream.

So shall I set up the new tank, add a tiny bit of aquarium salt, transfer mums over and feed with the algae suspension I have at work?

No, because the adult shrimp can't tolerate salt. You have to wait until the zoes hatch, remove the mother and then start adding your salt. Best of luck!

I have a thread in the invertebrate section about my plan to raise amano zoes, but there hasn't been much interest so far. Let me know how you get on!
