I have two tanks, a 37 gallon community freshwater tank, and a 75 gallon african cichlid tank. I have a 600 (maybe 700) dollar budget. I have time for weekly water changes. Do you think salt could work. If so what size tank would you say for a beginner like me?

Hi...salt is by far the most addicting and interesting part of fish keeping ive experienced so far.

When chosing tank size...you are best chosing fish first then tank to suit.

I asked for what size tank, because I have a limited budget. Clownfish, and a cleaner shrimp are a must

Well imo clown fish should be kept in around 120l or 30 gallons. Some keep them in a bit less but mine always seem to have done well in similar sized tanks. They usually stay around their spot.

A tank this size would allow a pair of small sp clowns. Cleaner shrimp and a couple of other small fish

budget wise how would this work
can you break down the costs
and i have no idea what a good skimmer is

The best size tank to start a marine tank is a large tank, usually a minimum of 75 gallons. 150 gallons is usually the best recommendation tho'.

There really is not too much of a difference in price wise in starting up a nano. Well, you don't need to invest in some of the larger pieces of equipment but depending, it can be expensive. I believe there are some price out threads around if you search it out. If you truly skimp, you may be able to start one up in the 400-700 dollar range.

It is true that large volumes of water are easier to maintain. But i started with 30 gallons and so do 1000s of otgers. Marine fish keepings moved on a lot in recent years so sayin people need 75 gallons minimums a bit out dated imo

Agree with Ben...

Another important aspect, corals; will you be wanting to do corals?
They will add additional cost such as lighting and RO water.
