Hi, I was wanting to get a few african dwarf frogs but have a couple questions.

1. Do I need to create an island or lower the water height in my aquarium for them?

2. Is my tank suitable for them:

200l aquarium with:
6 Penguin Tetras
2 Red Rainbowfish
2 Bolivian Rams
6 Metallic Yellow Guppies
5 Rasboras
3 Hara hara Catfish

No you dont need an island, but your tank height must be less than 15 inches.

I dont know anything about Rams, are they aggressive? If they would not attack the frogs, I'd say those tank mates would be okay. Unless the catfish are terrotorial over the bottom?

You won't see the frogs as much though, they can get frightened by lots of fish. You would have to make sure you have lots of hiding places like coconut caves and moss balls.

You would have to hand feed the frogs, with live or frozen live food by squirting it in their faces with a turkey baster or a baby syringe. They won't eat otherwise. You will have to feed a variety of food, and make sure the fish dont eat it all.

Only other thing is they are VERY small, and nocturnal, you will hardly be able to spot them in that big tank with all those other fish, so you might want to get quite a number of them? They should be kept in pairs at least anyway.

Water height is ~17inches, does that rule them out? I read 16-18 is max but around 12 is preferrable.

I have coconut cave and lots of planting for hiding, also the catfish are really small so doubt they will be a problem. I was also planning on getting some moonlights so I could see the nocturnal fish which I reckon would be excellent for the frogs.

I've only ever heard the 15 inch rule, but I'm sure someone else will have experience with higher water levels and be able to help.

Just bear in mind you will have to find each frog and handfeed it, and they are great hiders. I cant usually find all three of mine in a 60 litre without moving objects around, which is obv not ideal as it scares them. I have to guess most of the time. But if you know the time and effort won't be a problem then they really are cute little things.

By the way though, even when my aquarium lights are off and they are awake, they dont do much at all, so getting the blue lights might be a waste of money.

The moonlights are more to see the catfish which I never get to see. As for feeding, can I not just feed them after the lights go off like I do catfish?

Yes you should feed them after the lights go out. But they won't come out, they stay hiding. They only really move to get air or to change hiding places. oh but sometimes you see them 'hiding' in small places against the glass, like behind driftwood - this is the only time you get to actually inspect them.

Hey just found this, thought you might be interested :

"aggresive fish such as cichlids, gourmis, catfish, loaches, etc. are known to attack dwarf frogs and bite off their arms, legs and even kill them. "

although my dwarf gourami always ignored them

My catfish shouldnt be a problem. Fully grown its only a couple inches, very small thing.
