Help, i've just added the first peice of coral to my nano, i cant remember what it is called, i know that would help a lot, its best description would be a pink slug with green ball shaped flowers which expand and open up into pink 'trees'.
there are two seperate peices on the live rock, one of wich is very active, and the other used to be, but has lately been 'slumped' to one side in a fully expanded position but only moving occasionly and slowly. water quality is good but PH has suddenly dropped to 8.0 so done a water change and added buffer, your veiws would be appreciated.
Thanks
Si

Xenia...

If one colony is fine and the other is suffering I'd say most likely its a flowrate or lighting situation, either too much or too little of either.

8.0 is fine, i would never mess with pH, dont mess with the tank until the tank (not the test kits) tells you to. You do it by observing the tank inhabitants, when something goes wrong, test it. You did that and the pH which is at 8.0, so thats good, but no need to add buffer at that... maybe if it dips below 7.8 during the middle of the day with lights on.... but at 8.0 its fine :)

Xenia are notoriously weak in shipments. But once they get used to your system.... lets just say you may need to hire a gardener.

How did your "chap" do?

It is common for them to go necrotic... just keep slicing off the dead stuff till you see good flesh. The rotting parts can sufficate the healty bits. You don't need to save much to get a nice colony going.
