Is My Bristlenose Ok?

My bristlenose is almost 1 year old.

He has been in good health his entire life and doesn't seem to be growing much. From nose to tail he is exactly 3.5 inches which seems to be very small?
Could he be a different species as he doesn't have any visible "bristles" on his nose.

Yes! You have a female bristlenose. females don't have the bristles.

I wouldn't worrie about the size i have one about 2 years old and its still only about 2" but lack of bristles would suggest could be a female

I have a male. He has alot of bristles and is very territorial. He is only 1 year old and 3 inches long.

Yes you probably have a female BN, I have a male of my own and since I bought it half a year ago it hasn't grown much. BN plecos aren't supposed to exceed past 5-6 inches anyway, is why I love them.
