I was just wondering whether my pleco is a male or female please? I always believed him to be a male but it never really mattered as I only had him but now I’m considering getting him/her a friend.

Yes, that's a male. Females can have some bristles around the mouth, but they never up the face like that. Be careful getting another, males will fight quite nastily. And a male and a female will likely breed.
