hi guys

i bought home a largeish bn male from work to attempt breeding them with my two females. two days after i bought him home i did a 50% water change and ever since then he has taken ownership of the boat ornament of our tank. i had seen the girlies go in and out and now he stays in there most of the time. if anyone tries to swim in he swishes his tail around and scares them off. he spends all his time in the boat except for when its feeding time when he comes out for a while but doesnt venture far from his boat and doesnt leave for long. could he be guarding eggs? the boat has a hollow shell which is inaccesible to most fish and im hopiong that he is guarding some babies... :)

can you not see any eggs in there? perhaps he's setting up and protecting where he will breed. I've read that the males pick their spot, clean and tend to it and then wooo the female into coming back to "his place" :) I could be wrong, though. I have no experience with breeding BNs.

Good luck!

no cant see any eggs but if they would be were i would expect then i prob wouldnt see them. underneath the boat is not visible and i dont want to disturb him of there is something in there. whichever way i guess he is preparing for soemthing :)

he could have eggs/be breeding but BNs often choose little spots to sit for most of a few days, and then theyll move on.

i heard that and then i got sus because he was acting so territorial about it all...goes really nuts when anything comes near his boat...but even if he is preparing that would be good. any ideas on making them spawn?

well some time has passed now and he has gone from sitting on the top a lot to cleaning up inside the boat and then a few days later he stays under the boat all the time with his tail slightly flickering back and forth. i havent seen him outside of it in two days now. could there be something there now??

sounds like there breeding from what i was reading on a site as i am hoping to breed mine :) you could move the cave... see nothig there and then stp te breeing process. or you could leave it and have some bristlenose's survive in the plants...

sounds like he's got some eggs in there :good: it will take 3 days for them to hatch then a further 10 days before dad will let them out into the big wide world by then they will have there full colouring and be looking for food :good:

I have only one BN in my main tank, the other is in the quarantine tank, but the one in the main tank has taken up residence in a terra cotta 1/2 pot in the last couple of days, spends all it's time in there except when it comes out to eat, and I've only got one in there at the moment, so maybe it's not breeding behaviour after all.

Keep us posted on what happens tho, please
