My fish are swimming just under the surface as though they are nibbling the surface and also they are breathing very rapidly i treated them this morning for velvet after reading about the symptoms hoping i did right
2 3 spot gouramis
2 buenes airies tetras
1 appollo shark
1 other tetra ( dont know)
3 sucking loaches ( they always on the bottom)

any advice much appreciated thx

Velvet will show itself as a light dusting of gold spots on the fishes scales/skin, almost as if someone has dusted them with a brush, fish hanging at the surface could a symptom of many things from a simple oxygen related problem to gill flukes. Treating fish before you are 100% sure of the problem can cause problems in itself as if you have treated for the wrong disease you will have to remove the first medication before you can use the correct one.

thanks for advice CFC on is it velvet i treated them for fungus then i treated them for velvet the day after in the same tank they were really struggling on saturday.
I made a makeshift tank out of a large plastic toolbox put some old gravel in the bottom & a spare heater i had in put two gallon of water in it transfered the fish & almost immediately they were back to normal. I took about 17 gallons out of the tank syphoned the gravel put fresh treated water in waited a day & half for the fish to recover a bit & the tank to cycle a bit cleaned the glass like an idiot after i put water in it went green & very murky but the filter did its job after 2 days .

put the fish back in the water is crystal clear & the fish are fine & back to normal
I was told to do partial water changes once a month but since i joined the forum i learnt a bit & realise u need to do it at least once a week anyway thx again u saved my fish.
