It has taken to lying on its back not stuck to anything which gave me good opportunity to check the underside which looks in tip top condition.

Its just until the last few months it was always on a piece of wood/stuck to the filter hosing or hiding out in a flowerpot.

Hes male and about 5/6 inches. Feeding well and looks good.

Is this normal or BAD?

I have heard of and seen pictures of bristlenoses doing this before. And i think as long as he is healthy and eating and your tank is ok then it is nothing to worry about :D Here is the picture i am on about

id say it seems fairly normal as my male has always laid on his back since the day i got him 5 years ago. He always eats well and normally the first to food.

:D

too much vodka in the water :D :D

Ours do it - normally out of just plain lazyness when they give up hanging onto the underside of wood etc.

 Glad i have seen this, i would have thought mine was dead if i saw him like this. He could do with a Blanket and Pillow though couldn't he.
