I want to put my betta into a betta vase with a plant in it. Of course I'll put TetraSafe in the water, clean it out weekly, and feed the betta regularly in a 1 gal. vase. Is this a good idea?

A lot of people hate the vase idea. I prefer bowls or the 1 or 2 gallon aquaview, or mini bow. I would put him/her in a bowl instead.

What's the difference between a bowl and a vase?

It's kinda hard to get proper filtration in a vase, methinks. Not to mention, a lot of people put bettas in planted vases with the belief that they will eat the roots and not need additional food, which turns me off from the vase idea. If you decide to go with a vase, just make sure you realize that the betta will not eat the plant. (not implying you don't intend to feed your betta ^___^ Just making a point)

Though a betta can live well with no filtration assuming there are a lot of water changes, I always prefer to have a good filtration system... Good luck setting that up in a vase!

The difference is with a bowl, it's just a bowl. What people hate about the vase idea is that there's the plant on top. I tried it, when I bought my first betta. Waste of money. The plants' roots get all soggy and the plant doesn't stay healthy long. Therefore it doesn't benefit youor the fish.

So just get a normal bowl. Skip the plant,

well, maybe she isnt thinking of putting a plant in the vase??? we have many empty vases in our house, and without a plant there is really no difference than a bowl.

well i wouldnt put a plant on top of my betta tank AT ALL. cuts down on oxygen. gets in the way at feeding time an prolly annoys the betta. i say no to the plant but yes to the vaise

The reason a vase isn't reccomended is not because of the plant idea (its still bad though!) its because most vases start out wide at the bottom and go skinnier towards the top, so there isn't much surface area, and bettas need a good amount of surface area because they breath from the surface. If you get a large enough vase and don't fill it up to the very top then it will be ok. But I would go with a plastic square tank such as a kritter keeper because bettas like to swim back and forth and not up and down, it tires them out if they have to swim a long way to reach the surface.

Sounds all right. I'll keep my betta in the current tank he's in then. :)

Make sure whatever container you keep him in has a lid or cover of some sort. Bettas love to jump. Must be an extreme sport for bettas!

lmao :D yup yup. my bettas had the olympics last time i cleaned there tanks. 3 out of 4 jumped when i picked up the tanks to take them to the kitchen.

vases and bowls are the same thing, only difference is that a vase is more fancy and is more for decoration. i use anything i can find. granola container, cashew container, a vase that is shaped like a flower. all my betta are making bubble nests, so im guessing they are healthy.

lol
i never thought of useing that stuff...im prolly going to have alot more bettas now...
