hello all. I have a few goldfish which i bought yesterday, they are hiding by the filter intake pipe all the time, when they see me they dart back there. Also, they are pulsating, as if there is a jerky ness about them like a heart beat. so as they swim in the same position ( hovering swimming) they pulse, their fins all "jerk" simultaneously. is this normal, are they finding their alpha fish...if thats possible, or what is it? not all of them are displaying this behaviour, just one of them.

Hi, I've never known goldfish to display to one another using their fins, it is most likely an irritation of some kind that's causing the fin jerk, then it could be nerves, it is early days yet and the fish are getting used to their new environment, give them plenty of cover with plants to help them feel more secure and perhaps offer them some yummy bloodworm, they should soon associate your approach with good things :good:

my guppies hovered in the same place swimming but they had "shimmy".

I wouldn't have said it was normal for the goldfish to hide; they are none shy fish; mine all dart away when we are messing in their tank then they come and investigate what you are doing; then they all come.

I got some new fish last year and when they were added to the tank the new ones were the ones first for the food.

Mine have never behaved like yours have. They will "rest" if they are tired but it's not swimming or jerky

i noticed the temp was 26 so i bought a 12 inch airstone and put it in. theyhave become a little calmer looking, but we'll seehow they are after a week, maybe its just a settling in period. they are feeding well so i shall keep a close eye on them thanks both
