My female betta wont stay in breeding trap! She keeps jumping out of it and in with my male who is working on a bubble nest! I'm in the process of trying to condition them with live foods as I would like to try and breed them!

Should I leave her in with him she has now been in the tank since saturday! I tried five times to keep her in the trap but she doesnt want to stay there! There is some flaring between the pair as every now and then he'll chase her but then every so often she will chase him! She goes to see how his nest building is going on and then goes off!

Also is it normal for the male to blow a few bubbles go off for some food and then go back to nest building? I have plenty of daphnia swimming about the tank so they can eat when they want! The female is fine at the moment but I don't want to risk her being harmed! Should I relocate her in with my other females or let nature take its course with them?

Thanks!

Do you think she'll be ok to stay in with my male or should I remove her and place her in with my other females?

I suggest you separate them first and condition both of them and try it after a week or so. Or you might want to check my website on as how to breed them. I've been doing it for years and it works for me (don't mind the qualification of my male because I breed fighters lol).

Thanks I'll do that when i get home from work! What is the best foods for conditioning them? I've been using daphnia and some bloodworms (not too many though)

Daphnia and Bloodworms is enough this is the same food I use but if you can get some mosquito larvae then that's the best. ;)

none of my LFS seem to stock mosquito larve and it's not warm enough for them to start to breed over here as in summer there are plenty of larve about for my fish! At the moment I'm collecting the daphnia from my pond for the fish!

Also a quick unrelated question sorry! I was in a LFS at the wkend and they had lots of bettas in the glass containers for display which I understand is normal! The only thing I was concerned about was that they all looked really sad and lifeless in their containers and I was wondering if it was possible that they were too cold as the shop wasnt very warm when I went in! It actually upset me to see bettas that were barely moving and looked unhappy as my three males are always swimming about and coming to the front of the tank or flaring at their reflections! Not one of them moved when I went near them and one was lying on its side and looked half dead!

You know most of the LFS their main concern is to sell and generate money, only a few LFS cares about their fishes.

It's such a shame that they don't care what happens to the fish!

thanks for your replies by the way! I'll let you know how I get on with my attempt at breeding! Will probably fail but at least I can use it as a learning curve! And as long as all my bettas are happy and healthy thats all that matters to me at the end of the day!

Cracker - Just been reading your site about breeding and it says that the female will show verticle bars on her when she is ready for breeding! Are these bars black or are they just different shades? My female which is in with my male does have some stripes on her body (she did last night)! Does this mean that she is nearly ready to spawn! Also how will I be able to identify any eggs if/when spawning does occur?

Put and IAL or a dry Banana leaves in the tank don't do any water change in 3 days and just feed them 2 x a day never overfeed them.

Just follow my conditioning way in my website it's the same thing for breeding.
