Last time i set up a tank i used First Layer Laterite followed by my sand. I am about to re-work the tank with a new fine black gravel/sand instead, and was considering what to put underneath. I asked a question about whether to use root tabs or something like laterite, but only got one reply. I am now thinking of going the same route as I did before, but I am just checking if laterite is still a good option or whether there are any other good alternatives (black would be great).

I already have the sand, so I am trying to avoid suggestions which are the fert and the substrate in one..

Many thanks

Laterite would work fine, as would lots of other commercial under-gravel substrates; Tetra Complete Substrate is a good example - I used it before and found it gave me good results. There are loads of similar substrates available, though, and they all result in good plant growth...

Yeh any base layer substrate should work well, you could try the tropica one.

I think I going to do what you asked us not to, but eco-complete is black and you wouldn't need to top it with anything. Sorry if thats annoying, but better say it and you ignore it than not say it and you not know :)
