Is Breeding Platies Really That Easy?

its too easy IMO, i added 3 platies (2F, 1M) and with in a month, fry was in the tank.they are the second easiest to breed(guppies being the first)the platies breed like rabbits and females have fry every 4-6 week.they can store sperm so removing the male after birth is pointless to spot the next batch, it will eventually stop fry as she will run out of sperm, but after 3-5 lots of fry.in a 10 gallon tank, its easy. provide lots of plants and hiding places and add 2 females and 1males.this is because the male constantly wants to breed and 2 females will prevent 1 female always being harassed.to save the fry either remove when born and place into a breeding net/trap or leave to survive in tank. added the pregant female to a breeding net/trap isnt advised as it causes high stress as possabily aborted fry.reports are heard of platies not eating the fry, IMO they do and will eat them no matter how much you feed, usally the male will eat them but the females will have a snack aswell.

Most people would say yes. You have to make sure they have good variety of food (live, frozen, flaked), temperature, a nice tank, and temperature. You should read the "Breeding Liveberers Guide" to help you start. Since platies eat and breed in nature it is usually easy. Good Luck.

Common livebearers are relatively easy!!!! as long as they have good food, clean water, their breed!!!!

Yep, no problem at all. I've found platys to be much easier to breed than guppies - although I am currently over-run with baby gupps.

I've never had any parents eating the fry - I'd like them to eat a few?

The only time I ever saw some infanticide was when a little platy fry had caught hold of the end of a bloodworm and a large female came along and ate the both of them - but I think it was an accident! :hyper:
