Hey marine guys and girls, so I've pretty much got my freshwater planted tanks to a T and now I'm up for a little bit more of a challenge. I've got a 50L that I'd be happy to convert into a nano reef. I know its a little small, especially for a salt-newbie but that's all I got to work with due to space. Trust me I'd love a huge marine tank but that dream is for another day. I've begun doing some research but I just wanted to know what you experienced saltwater aquatists think? Also how expensive do you think running a nano of this size would be? Due to the size I'd probably buy the RO water from LFS in bulk. Any tips, suggestions or critisms are welcome!

As you say it's very small for a beginner but depends what you're planning on doing with it.

If you're happy with LR and a few inverts, possibly one fish, then why not give it a go.

As for cost.....again depends on what you're doing. There is not set costs as there is too many variables. Best advice would be to research what you're planning, cost up all the equipment/livestock/consumables and then post again with details.

It could def. work. I have too 10 gallons. I think 1 fish is a little off, i have three in each of mine. The key is to pick small, peaceful fish that wont bother being close to each ohter. You dont need a reef, a tank with a few fish and some cool inverts can be awesome.

Getting up and running will cost you in the 200$ to 300$ range, then you have fish and inverts...etc.

Sounds like a good idea, :good:

I've read that clownfish are pretty hardy fish but I'm getting mixed messages about tank size requirements could a single or even a pair live happily in a 12 gal? (50L)

I have a pair in one of my tanks. No anemone, but a pair is fine in a 12 gallon. :good:

After pricing up how much its going to cost to convert and then the running costs after that I think I'm gonna give it a miss :(

Compared to a freshwater setup marines do cost more. A small tank would be cheaper.

Check your area for tank breakdowns. You probably have a local reef forum or Gumtree which could aid you on that. Live rock usually costs about a £5 per KG from break downs. 1kg per 10 litres is the recommended amount. RO water costs for me £2.50 for 25 litres. On a 50 litre setup you only need to change about 10 litres/week (20%). I do 10% water change per week but I use a protein skimmer.

The problem with Reefs, they become addictive which is not good for your wallet. But it is a great aspect of the hobby.
