I have a tank with mainly mollies in it. But I have an irridescent shark in there that has white spots that are surrounded by a ring of a white film like substance on the skin. It very much so resembles a bullseye. Any ideas as to what this might be and how I treat it.

sounds like white spot what type of shark is it sounds identical to what im going throught at the moment :(

How big is your tank? How big is the ID shark? You do know that they get to at least 2 feet long? They are really jumpy and delicate fish and really should not be kept by inexperienced fish keepers. I know because I made the same mistake myself. I have no idea what could be ailing him. It does sound a little like ich, in which case you are going to have to treat.

ID sharks need a fast current to be happy and a really big tank, we're talking at least 250G, maybe more. I am sure that there are some that will disagree with that, but I have seen a bigger one at the lfs and they are huge. The ones I saw were about 18" long and at least 6" wide. They don't stay silver when they get big, they turn black. And they stop looking so cute too. They need lots of room to be happy and lots of hidey holes to feel safe.

Can you post a picture of the shark? Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

YES I HAVE A BIG TANK. I HAVE HAD HIM FOR FOUR YEARS NOW...SO I'M NOT INEXPERIENCED. JUST DONT HAVE PROBLEMS LIKE THIS VERY OFTEN. MY TANK HAS BEEN EXTREMELY HEALTHY FOR THE MOST PART. I DONT THINK ITS ICK BECAUSE A FEW MONTHS AGO I ADDED SOME NEW FISH AND ENDED UP WITH AN ICK INFESTATION. I TREATED IT AND ALL HAS BEEN FINE. THIS DOESNT LOOK THE SAME AS IT DID BEFORE. HE SEEMS TO BE THE ONLY ONE DISPLAYING SYMPTOMS. BUT HE IS ALSO THE ONLY SCALELESS. THANKS FOR ALL FEEDBACK. ANY ADVICE WILL BE APPRECIATED.

Can you possibly take a picture of it? Could it be an injury from something? Another fish maybe? Could the white film be his slime coat coming off? I am having a hard time picturing what it could be.

Sorry if I came off as harsh, most fish stores sell these cute baby ID sharks and people like me buy them before they know any better. Then cause they are so delicate they get sick and we find places like this to get some help. It is then we find out the truth. I saw that he was in with mollies and assumed he was small as I didn't know your tank size.

I really hope you can figure out what is wrong. Does he have any other symptoms? Lethargy, not eating, etc...?

CANT FIGURE OUT HOW TO ATTACH THE PIC......LOL.....NOT HAVING A VERY GOOD DAY!

... wouldn't you just press "browse" in the attachment section of the reply page? Or you could host it some where and post it as in [ img ]http://hostname.com/yourpic.jpg[ /img ](take away spaces)

There are 2 ways to attach a photo. At the bottom of the reply screen there is a box called file attachments, you can browse your computer, find the file and attach it that way, or you can go to www.photobucket.com and upload the picture there. Then once the picture is uploaded, copy the address of the picture and paste it into the body of your reply. To make the picture show up in the body of the reply and not just a link to it, copy the address that is beside img.

It is probably easier to use the upload function here.
