would the IP 6 5 rated lighting be ok for a lid of a fish tank
i know this is the code used for the majority of outdoor lighting and is waterproof - not submersible-
the 6 means that it's otally protected against dust and the
5 means it's protected against low pressure jets of water from all direction with limited ingress permitted

if i can i would get the 6 6 or 6 7 but the 6 5 is easier to get hold old

i can get these lighting sets easily and cheaply - hubby discount

So anyone know please let me know

Thanks Sarah x

yes it will be fine

as it says on that website it will be fine in with 'low pressure jets'

imo a low pressure jet would be something like a hose/ light rain

high pressure jets would be a jetwash etc.

in a fish tank the only type of jet would be a filter. i wouldnt class this as a high pressure jet. im sure the filter wont be directed onto the light either. it would only be the evaporation that would get to it.

my rena light is only ip44 iirc.

btw im a spark and if your really not convinched i will look in the regs and comfirm what it says.

you could do it but just take care to keep them dry. a plastic cover will help doing so.

ip rated fluorescents come with a cover.....

my aquarium ones dont. and theyre IP 67 (put door use) IP65 wont come with covers as theyre not designed for out door use.

(asked uncle who is a sparky) and he said theyll be fine with some form of condensation cover.

Non Corrosive Weatherproof Fluorescent Light Fittings

IP65 weather proof fitting
Polycarbonate diffuser
ABS base
Complete with stainless steel mounting clips Hinged gear tray for ease of installation

Applications
High humidity areas

Kitchens
Sports stadium
External applications - Outbuildings - Stables - Workshops

look at the link. they come with a cover. all the ip56 flouresent fittings ive ever put up come with a diffuser. these are a cover when the clips are put on it pulls the diffuser towards the base where there is a rubber seal. you would be able to squirt a hose at it and no water will get in.

we use fittings like these (ip65) for a festival where they are tempory held up with cable ties and are exposed to rain (last year they had so much water the river thames flooded) none of our fittings go effected (there is over 40)

IP65 will be fine as long as it is not immersed for any length of time... the occasional splash or dip should not be a problem as the rating is always fairly conservative.

that's good then
hubby works for a builders merchant and they got lots different types of outdoor lighting - IP65 s quite cheap and just had some flouresents in

going to try screwfix aswell now see if they got any cos they are now part of where hubby works

should be fine, just swap the lamps for "daylight" lamps as 4200k is quite "warm" ie orange, fine for fish but "cooler" lamps are better for plants ( and give better colour rendition)

normal aquatic tubes should fit it ;) (as i already have lots of them spare marine ones aswell lol - was given when got my tanks )

if you have 10K marine tubes. one of these mixed with a 4200K will give a good white colour.
