I wanted to make a filter for my Tropica aqua cube and made this for it.



There is still a Little tweaking needed, found a slight air leak at the joint at the bottom of the filter.

The pump is an exo-Tera 250 for water falls for reptiles.
The tub is a Lock&Lock 'TM' food tub 1.8L
The pipes are from B&Q.
The filter will be mainly mechanical but will also be biological.

Looking at the bottom picture my first thought was which is the filter - left or right! (joke!)

Seriously though - nice work Moody. I've toyed with the idea of doing this myself too. Might look nicer with clear flexible tubes though if you want to follow the aethetics through?

Maybe getting a good seal would be even more difficult then - what do I know?

What is the flow rate of the powerhead rated at Moody - it looks like you tank load will be turned over completely 20 times a minute! You could probably keep an oscar in there with that rate of filteration!!!

If you've got another container I'd re do the plumbing... at teh moment if the seal at teh bottom fails - water will go everywhere.

If you re routed the pipe through the top but reaching to the bottom, the 'bucket' wont have an holes in it to fail

Good point smithrc, never thought of that, and it is very important that water doesnt go anywere becauce it will be on my desk above my PC tower.
I do have another tub just in case it went pear shape when making it.

The pipes were the only pipes i could get, if i was to use clear filter piping it tends to be bendy so it wouldnt work how i would of wanted it too.

The problem is with the cube being only 8ltr any hard wear any were near it stands out like a sore thumb.

If i was realy flush i would want nice clear glass inlet and outlets to scale,but im a slave to the wage

As for the flow rate im not to sure as i dont have the box infront of me.

The cube came from my wonderfull girlfreind for my 25th at xmass. I havnt seen anywere online that sells them, any LFS that sells tropica products should be able to get you one, theres a couple of places near me that sell them.
Have a look on the tropica website and see if you can find a stockist in your country or county.

I think you should splash out and get yourself a glass intake, outlet and glass/ceramic co2 diffuser to complete the look
