Thought I would introduce you to my favourite girls!

Rosie is a 16.1hh 11yr old Dutch Draught mare. She was born in Holland. Somehow, unbeknown to me she ended up at a meat market and was purchased by a dealer as a "job lot" with 9 other horses!

This is what she looked like when I went to view! Check out her hooves  (Man in pic is my dad, so please no abuse) She was riddled with lice, worms, ring worm, very under weight, sores to her mouth, hooves extremely overgrown and had actually formed "toes". She was a proper mess, but had the sweetest kindest temperment I had ever seen. I came away feeling very sorry for her, but couldn't justify giving the dealer nearly £2600!!! I was told her meat value was only £900! I tried for a week to forget about her and knew that it was a lot of money to part with only for the poor thing to pine away from something I couldn't see. She had had a vet check to get her in the country so I felt a bit better she didn't have anything nasty. Just had been very neglected. However, a week later without a thought I drove 400 miles and offered the dealer £1500 to take her there and then. Best desicion I have ever made, even if it was costly!!!

After only a month of trying to get Rosie back to health I noticed she was bleeding from behind. Her stomach felt swollen and even though she had been wormed she had an appetite of a....well....HORSE  I had no history on her, but I had to rule everything out. While waiting for the vet, a friend offered me a "Weefoal" pregnancy test she used on her miniture horses. She said at least I could rule that out, but they only worked on horses at least 4 months pregnant. It went positive in seconds!!! I asked the vet to scan her, but she told me I was wasting my money as that "coat rack" couldn't possibly be in foal! I showed her the test and she just laughed! (Yes I have a new vet now!) Anyway I managed to get her to do it...eventually and to her amazement a little horse appeared on the screen!

Fast forward to 26th July 2009 and at 7.00am I was greated to this.....

I'm hoping to drive them both and do a few weddings. At the moment they are just incredibly spoilt and expensive pets

Oh my goodness! What beautiful girls

I love draught horses; in my dreams I'd have a Clydesdale!

You're so lucky; I'm incredibly jealous

Edit; forgot to say what a great job you've done on Rosie; she looks like a different horse now :good:

Thank you Fluttermoth :good:

Yes she is a different horse now. It took alot of sweat and tears to get her back to full health. Even though she is one of the sweetest horses I've known she has never been trained to pick up her feet and it causes no end of trouble! She has to be sedated by the vet so my farrier has a fighting chance of getting her feet up! Then she leans on him and almost crushes him to death! Summer on the otherhand is a darling and stands for the farrier without a head collar! So when my farrier/vet bill combined comes in at around £150 every 8 weeks (trims only!) I try not to faint!!!! :S

But I would never be without either of them! I have a feeling Summer will grow bigger than mum, which will be nice as my 6ft4" hubby as claimed her as his mount :D

What lovely graceful animals.

Keith.
