Ember
Fish Fanatic
Hi, I'm Ember and I'm a betta fanatic.
D
I am and have been a betta fanatic now for about 4 years. I started with a 2.5 gallon bowl, then another, and another, then a 6 gallon Eclipse. I finally reached 4 bowls (2.5 gallon), a 3 gallon hex, and the 6 gallon tank. My husband complained about it starting to look like petshop so I consolidated the bowls into a 10 gallon tank that I divided into 3, it's my betta condo. A very unsophisticated design but I love it.
Most of my bettas were rescues in bad shape, several were very near death (in fact, a few were mistaken for dead). I've been real good at nursing them back to health. Other than a couple, I've never had a betta less than 6 months. Although, unfortunately, none more than 2 years (actually correct that, my lone female is now about 26 months and still thriving). Not really sure how long they're usually supposed to live. I'd say the average lifespan of my bettas so far is about 14-20 months or so.
I've been pretty good at keeping myself limited to 3 boys in the betta condo and 1 lone female in the 6 gallon Eclipse. But two days ago I went to the lfs JUST to get a flourescent bulb for my tank and they had the most gorgeous bettas I've ever seen in a store! I couldn't resist. Not only did I buy one but when I realized I forgot something and went back, I saw another that I absolutely needed. It was extremely difficult to choose, they were all so very gorgeous. I did limit myself though, I brought home only 2 gorgeous crowntails. The first guy I couldn't resist had colors of a Mustard Gas. The lfs had 4 total like him. Yellow and purple or yellow and blue. I could hardly decide. I'd always wanted a Mustard Gas and I've always wanted a crowntail! Here it was in one fish. Then the second I couldn't tear myself away from was a very distinctly red white and blue crowntail. He's incredible! They are both in their own 2.5 gallon bowl with bettamax. I treat all my new adoptees to a 5 day betta max spa treatment upon arriving home. It seems to work well for us so far.
Hopefully I'll have pics to post soon. Unfortunately I have internet issues with the computer that I use for pics. Might take some sorting out.
