Anyone scientifically minded, how bad would it be to be regularly smoking cannabis around an enclosed (with a very small opening) aquarium? Asking for a friend

I personally wouldn’t...

The smoke may land on the surface of your tank. Then, if they come up for air or if they eat, they may get that nasty stuff inside their system. Then they may die.

Yeah I was thinking that. Guess another room will have to designated for that purpose haha. It's a shame because it's an enjoyable combination, or so I've heard lmfao.

Smoking can never be “enjoyable” in my eyes.

Yes, I would definitely suggest telling him to smoke in a different room. :)

Ugh, I agree. Enough that my neighbours smoke it and the smell comes through the windows and stinks
It’s totally nasty and totally bad for your body. But, people get addicted and they “can’t stop”.

You know it’s bad when there’s a group of kids over at your house and you’re smoking right in front of them. (I’ve seen this on a number of occasions)

Yeah yeah sure Ted. Just asking for a friend :)

You want to avoid getting any type of smoke near fish tanks because it does affect the fish. This can be smoke from bush fires, cigarettes, wacky tobacky or even just a lot of candles. The smoke gets into the water and makes it hard for the fish to breath, and it stays in the water until you replace the water.

Fish can take weeks or even months to recover from smoke in their water and labyrinth fishes (Bettas & Gouramis) have more problems than other fishes due to them taking air from the surface.

If they have to smoke in the room with the fish, get them to put Activated Carbon in the filter and replace it each week. And get them to do a 75% water change and gravel clean the substrate a couple of times a week to get the smoke out of the water.
Make sure any new water is free of chlorine/ chloramine before it's added to the tank.

There's an awful lot of misconceptions here but I don't think this is an appropriate setting in which to address them.
There is no friend, honestly I thought that was a pretty obvious joke, my mistake lol.
I do use activated carbon, just something I always use more out of habit than anything else. Not a fan of massive water changes. Unless it was a real emergency of the likes that to date I've never faced. I get the theory, just not to my liking. I usually do ten to fifteen percent water changes two or three times a week, vac the substrate every time. If I upped the water changes to say twenty to twenty five percent but at the same frequency it would put me at the same sorta level wouldn't it, just more spread out over that seven day period. What do you reckon?

You do water changes for 2 main reasons.
1) to reduce nutrients like ammonia, nitrite & nitrate.
2) to dilute disease organisms in the water.

Fish live in a soup of microscopic organisms including bacteria, fungus, viruses, protozoans, worms, flukes and various other things that make your skin crawl. Doing a big water change and gravel cleaning the substrate on a regular basis will dilute these organisms and reduce their numbers in the water, thus making it a safer and healthier environment for the fish.

If you do a 25% water change each week you leave behind 75% of the bad stuff in the water.
If you do a 50% water change each week you leave behind 50% of the bad stuff in the water.
If you do a 75% water change each week you leave behind 25% of the bad stuff in the water.

Fish live in their own waste. Their tank and filter is full of fish poop. The water they breath is filtered through fish poop. Cleaning filters, gravel and doing big regular water changes, removes a lot of this poop and makes the environment cleaner and healthier for the fish.

My neighbours have kids and they smoke weed right next to them -_-

Uh, I’m a child of the ’70’s and spent lots of time with friends who smoked. It was everywhere at the time. I tried it a few times and hated it. However, if you smoke so much that you need to worry about how much is in the room, then you have a serious problem! (Your friend does).Tell your friend to get some help.

I agree. OP, your friend needs to get help. Weed will be harmful to him (I'm assuming your friend is a male?) at some point, addiction is serious and your friend won't be able to stop unless he get help.

I never said anything about twenty five percent once a week? As stated I do water changes two to three times a week. At the minute three. Once I'm back at work, at least two sometimes three. Which is 50-75% of the water volume changed over a seven day period. Theoretically it should be essentially the same I would have thought?
I'm going to guess you have no idea of the data regarding cannabis and addiction rates? I really cba getting into a discussion about the pros, cons and future legislation of cannabis, clearly we won't agree. The same as any smoke, when it catches in the light you can see it clearly as it wisps and slowly falls. It's not that there's a lot, it's just it was brought to my awareness in a particular manner.
There is no friend. Cannabis is not crack. If your going to preach at least educate yourself ever so slightly on the subject first.
Colin thanks for giving me some genuine considerations. I will be particularly vigilant with my carbon and up the water changes a bit whilst of course keeping an eye on things.

My ex would have many friends smoke in the room with an uncovered fishtank, the fish seemed fine. Considering the mismatch of species he had that managed to coexist the smoke never seemed an issue. In 3 years one fish jumped out, one had tumours and 2 got eaten by a cichlid that really shouldn’t have been there. However he had previous lost a tank full when some idiot stuck a spliff in an air intake. A lot of smoke will kill them.

I just recommend your friend to smoke in another room.

It would be possible for him to smoke on that room and not kill the fish, but I wouldn’t recommend it. It’s also a lot more work.
