hi peeps

I've had several fish die recently of finrot(well kind of it always live bearers and they get a hollow belly stop feeding the die) not all together over a month or 2... I went to my LPS and they gave me fungus and finrot treatment as you would expect, but I was told that as the fish that were dieing were live bearers I would need anti internal bacteria so I went and got that today.

heres the problem... I was told later on yesterday about the anti bac stuff and by then I had already added the finrot and fungus treatment ....

the anti bac stuff says i need to wait 7 days after using the anti bac stuff beofre I can use any other meds in the tank but im not sure about the other way around... has any one else had this problem what should I do I dont want to do anything that can damage my tank life and at the same time I want to treat the illness before anymore fish die...

should i do a 50% water change or should I wait a day or two and risk the infection either worsening or spreading...

any help would be great...

kiss  kiss

I've been in the same situation, though fish probably less desperately ill. I treated first with anti-finrot, then after the stated number of days did water change, put the carbon filter in and then started on the antibacteria medication. Also added salt. Fish made full recovery.

Typically, finrot is a secondary infection.
That is, it comes about being when there is something else wrong with the fish - typically poor water conditions or stress.

See what is says here and here.

Either way, you need to work out the root cause of the problem with the fish, otherwise you can treat and treat and it won't make a difference.

As to your question about the med.

I would avoid mixing meds anyway, esp if it says that they don't go (no matter which way it says).
From the way you are speaking, I'm gonna hazard a guess you are using the interpet treatments - no's 9 and 7 off the top of my head.
I have personal experience of mixing these, (a while ago, when I was younger/naive/impatient), and I would STRONGLY advise against it.
When I did I experienced a mini cyclce, caused by the die off of all the nitrificing bacteria. I found out later that a chemical in one, plus a chemical in the other plus light produces cycanide. Not strong enough to kill the fish, but enough to act as an anti-bacterial agent to the friendly bacteria.

So, do what it says; wait. Water changes may help anyway if this is the cause of the finrot, but I would still wait until all traces of the medicine have gone.

Finally, consider isolating the infected fish (if this is possible).

And good luck!

EDIT: Wrote this without reading the title - lol. You are using Interpet!

i cant work out the reason for the problem but I have been informed that live bearers tend to suffer from this problem alot. according to my water tests my water conditions are ideal and as for stress. i have changed the layout of the tank resently but other then that nothing is different.

I think I may just have to avoid live bearers i've have problems with the tank since I bought a molly about six months ago and it died of this problem within a week. none of the other fish have had this problem.
oh well, lets see how we go, figers crossed...

Are you vigilant about your tank cleaning ? How often do you clean your tank and filter and do a gravel vac ? How long has your tank been set up ?
Finrot and bacterial infection stem primarily from poor water conditions :/
Never mix meds unless the state that it can be done. But those two interpet meds cannot be mixed. You'd have to make sure all traces are removed before switching.
Though that said, fish are generally already quite weak at the point (when battling two ailments) and it can often do more harm than good switching mid-treatment.

the infections does seen to set in after I havent cleaned the tank for 2 weeks I have a memory like a seive but when I origanally got the tank I was told that tank cleaning should be done fortnightly I was told after that it should be done weekly and yes I do use a vac... the tank been set up for at least 13 months... I'm going to do daily 30% water changes next week and then switch to the anti bac stuff next week end by then the finrot stuff should be out of the tank... decided to leave doing water changes till monday as i thought at least leaving the finrot stuff in for the 4 days is going to help kill any finrot or fungus thats in tank... always a good thing to keep that sort of thing under wraps, does that sound good??

thank you

Need to maintain the tank once a week, as bacteria can multiply in dorimant areas, just do a water change and run some black carbon for several hours then add the bacterial med.
