Well after a failed overflow box attempt I have decided to drill my marine tank. It was previously drilled but the standpipes were right in the middle of the tank, as im sure some no.

Anyway, I would appreciate any hints and tips people can give me on constructing the weir.
I am going to have a single 2" hole but I dont know whether to just have 2 peices of glass (serrated at the top) around the hole or to have a standpipe over the hole too or just have the pipe.

Anyone have any hints or tips or any info really about doing this?

thanks
josh

Have a look at the weir BigC made in his tank. He used a ventilation grill for the weir comb.

Jimy, the overflow box I got was too big for the return pump I had so there wasnt a continuous flow and it also had a small hole in the seel which meant I had to re-prime it every day.

Cheers AK77, much appreciated.

No problem. What make was the overflow box just out of interest?

It wasnt a make of overflow, it was one I bought off ebay from someone who makes them.

I will be emptying my tank tomorrow to get ready for making the weir, which im really excited about. Fish keepers ey :p

I also bought a skimmer yesterday too. Its a V2 skim 1200, for tanks up to 260US gal so it willgo on my larger tank when I hopefuly upgrade. It is 3 months old and I got it for £75. The model down (v2 1000) I would to have paid £90 from work and that is including my 40% staff discount, so I think I got a real bargin there!

I think I know the vendor you are on about, as they are the only person making them on eBay. Was it bosshogthemasterpig or something like that? If so, that is actually Cleartides selling on eBay. I had two overflow boxes from him, both were faulty. The first one wasn't equally spaced throughout the "n" section, so instead of getting 2000LPH, I was getting under 400LPH. The replacement one one leaked at the bottom of it. When I asked for a 3rd replacement I never heard another word from them. Shoddy workmanship, lack of quality control and p!$$ poor communication. Avoid like the plague!

Yeah thats the one. Seems to me like theyre a dodgy job then!
It doesnt half annoy me when people make, what can be a difficult enough hobby, even harder by their lack of quality just for making a few quid.

lol. Yeah I suspected it was the same seller. It really wouldn't take a few minutes to ensure your product didn't leak or was working properly. I've worked with acrylic, I made my own nano tank and sump. Yeah, it can be tricky at times to ensure the solvent wicks between the parts to ensure a water-tight union but, you test it to make sure it is safe to use. I hope he's got public liability insurance because it'll only be a matter of time before one leaks/fails and causes thousands of pounds worth of damage to someones home.
