okay, now this morning i have a platy with a red, distended belly. he is barely swimming. i think he is a goner. i tested my tank and everything is normal...the pH was a little low last night, but i checked it after a 25% water change and it was 7.0 again. i have tried anti-ich med and maracide previously (for another fish) and the maracide is still in the tank. any ideas? :byebye:

Most likely an internal parasite is the cause. However, any chance it may be constipation?

maybe it could be, i'm not familiar with that (or much else, i'm afraid). i have him isolated ing a bredding net b/c he was having trouble swimming. i heard that you should feed a shelled frozen pea for constipation. is that right?

I have heared that the frozen pea works but have never tried it myself. With the belly being red, I do not think it is constipation. You can try treating him with some internal parasite or bacterial medicine in the breeder though.

he is lying on his side most of the time, and now has pinecone scales over the red belly area :dunno:

Sounds like you have a problem with Dropsy. You can try treating the fish with an antibacterial, but dropsy does not have a high survival rate.
Sorry, :byebye: I have lost one fish to it.

I have lost 3 fish to dropsy (from overfeeding)...

I just had a platy die from what i thought were internal parasites....she was extremely thin and had a bent spine at the end....never dropsy signs though.

I hope your fish is OK, and if not, I hope it passes peacefully :(

mickey died yesterday. i am beginning to think that i am doing something wrong!! apparently healthy fish have died in the last week, while my "sick" endler gilligan is doing fine, other than the strange growth on his tail (which has not changed with salt, ich med, melafix or anti-fungal med!!!!)
oh well, i'll keep trying!

i had same problem. i randomly had a fish die who was healthy and then noticed dropsy in anothe rof my fish who died within 4 days despite treatment. i'm still trating my tank though my fish look ok now.

sorry i'm no help
