Hi ,

I was looking into external filter systems for my tank and was wondering what people on the forum think of them .. , do you prefer them to internal filter's ? or isnt there much difference ?

Am currently watching an auction on ebay which am interested in , though would like some feedback before i place a bid :)

Thanks.

Internals take up so much room, and then you have the problem of trying to "hide" them... My external canister is tucked away in my cabinet.

Externals are:

1. more expensive
2. well worth the money
3. easier to handle
4. dont need as much maintainance
5. are cheaper in the long run (see point 4!!)

Get an external if you can. I use TetraTec and find they are amazing...cheaper than Eheim and work just as well if not better.

The price of that Fluval is pretty low in that bid...place one with a top value of 50 pound if ya want...you can pick up a brand new TetraTec EX 700 for 50 pound from www.zooplus.co.uk with free postage!!

Look at this link: http://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/fish/technic...anister_filters

I deal with Zooplus all the time, they have great value on alot of fish equipment, including UV sterilizers!!!

yep i prefer externals, the only internal one i have is running along side my external in my biggest tank ready to put in a hospital/quarantine tank if needed :)

No noise....the only way you can tell if they are on is to touch them and feel a slight vibration or put your hand in your tank to feel the water flow! :)

Is it hard to switch from an internal to an external in an established tank.

Or is it a case of running both untill the externals matured?

I'd definitely go for external. We have no problems with noise from our filters, in fact the internal ones are the ones that can be noisy at times.

No problem with the switch Scunny, run them in parallel for a few weeks and then the internal can be removed. You can squeeze the filter from the internal into the external just for extra measure after the few weeks! :)

thats what i have done in the past when changing from internal to external, i left them running side by side for about 4 weeks :)
