I have many terrestrial plants growing out of my aquariums… one of my favorites are peace lilies, and 2 of them in particular, closest to the hang on back filters, are double the size, of ones next to them in the same tank, and where you really see the difference, is in the roots, one is by the outlet flow, and has thicker straighter roots, the other literally prefilters the inlet with a huge mat of fine roots, almost like a coarse sponge… I have to pull back the one by the inlet occasionally, to keep the roots from growing into the filter inlet, but that plant seems trainable, as after getting pulled back a few times, it acts more like a mat, and quits sending roots into the inlet tube… but it’s really noticeable, that these 2 plants grow more vigorously with the water flow, yet differently with the unfiltered water pulled across the roots, than with the water cleaned of solids, and acted upon by the beneficial bacteria in the filter media…

Also the Pothos vines put down roots in the tanks, the ones exposed to the flow of the filters grow bushy, and are heavily grazed in my Hillstream tank… the ones in the center of the tank, away from the filter flow, are way less bushy, and must not catch as much grazing material, as the fish are rarely on those…

I have 2 tangles of Java ferns, that started around the filter intakes in different tanks, so aquatic plants seem to benefit from the flow as well…
anyone else notice how your plants interact with your filters???
