Intake Strainer Height!

Is it a case of trial and error or is there an optimal height to place the intake strainer, low as possible, mid level?

middle is usually most common place. but if you follow the current, try to place the strainer so the debri is flowing in constantly, do you understand what i mean? if its too high most of the current is underneath it and vice versa
 
Cheers for the fast reply deftuch, I've currently (see what I did there) got mine set about 2" off bottom, But I've just re-positioned the outflow direction (at the other end of the tank) to get the water cycling more in the direction of the intake, and already the visible debris is reducing
