Hey all,

I was just wondering, what about big tanks and insurance?

If one has a 6 ft by 2ft x 2 ft tank, and fills it with a few grands worth of liverock and live-stock, and a disaster happens like a cracked tank or similar not only would the replacent of tank and contents cost a fortune, but imagine the cost of replacing carpets, furniture, and in a worse case scenario big widescreen TV, blu-ray player, and games consoles too.

So do people here mention their tank when buying their policy, or do they go for special tank insurance.
Or is that sort of damage covered in the normal house insurance?

And if the damage is covered, what about the cost of tank and contents and kit replacment?

thanks is advance for reading this.

live stock is never covered as far as i know.

Your home insurance will sometimes cover equipment though. Best to check it

I don't know how things are done over on your side of the pond, but here in the US, insuring a tank is a nightmare. There is NO insurance for livestock in a tank. While there are other forms of pet insurance (for dogs, cats, larger animals) there's nothing for saltwater livestock. Also for damage, the only way to get water damage or the like is to ger flood coverage and do it that way. Although if your tank leaks and causes an electrical fire, that's covered in standard homeowners/renters... go figure.

But you UK guys do things a lot differently in terms of insurance and legal things than we do over here so it might take some mroe looking into.

i have seen people get a whole new set-up without declaring their tank after splits as the said pumps etc have been damaged by running dry. The insurance companies delayed and dithered a bit but eventually paid up. If i had an expensive set up i would make sure equipment was going to be covered. No chance with fisha nd corals though

Thank you very much for your replies.

I shall raise the mater with my insurance chappies, before I spend a small fortune on an enormous salt tank!

I have a buddy who has a small pond installed in his basement, tall dollars. If it leaks it would cause considerable damage. He asked his insurance agent the same question.

Bottom line; if it is big enough to sit in insure it as a hot tub.
