I am looking a way to install fans in my 55 gallon tank. It has two separate lights both being like 24 inches. On ebay I found this http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...52BSI%26otn%3D4 which sounds like something I need. How should I go about installing it thou. No luck with finding a guide on the forums. So perhaps when and if I do install fans ifor mine I'll kick off a write up. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

$19.99! Seems very expensive for a few very cheap components available anywhere. Doesn't even include finger guards.

As for installing it, I would cut holes in the hood in a suitablew position and bolt the fans in, (which aren't included either). Arrange it so the airflow is through the hood, i.e. that the inlet fan is at one end, blowing inwards, and the exhaust at the other end, blowing outwards.

Fans do NOT cool water.... evaporation does ! So keep an eye on that water level ! (especially if you run marine)

Fans do NOT cool water.... evaporation does
... and by removing the water saturated air in the hood and replacing it with dry air, the fans promote evaporation and thus cool the water.

MMMMmmmm, isnt that what I said ? ;-) A LOT of folk have the preconception that fans cool things... people, PC's etc and they dont ! I would imagine marine lads would have to keep a close eye on water levels to prevent chemical build up - because only water will be lost.

So according to you fans don't cool at all and are usless?

What you want to tell everyone is that the fans them selfs don't cool but they move cooler air to the unit or liquid that needs to be cooled. Heat transfer will only take place when something is cooler then the other. Fans on heatsinks bring in cooler air to the heatsink so more heat transfer can happen. Same deal with water, how do you think chillers work, or Air conditioners etc? They need fans to force cooler air around the hot elements to cool them off. Without the fans, the air around the warm elements would never cool in the amount you want.

Whaaaat ???? the topic is cooling of aquarium water, which relies on evaporation.... air chillers - WATER evaporates, air conditioner GAS evaporates - WHAT IS YOUR POINT ?

You don't understand heat transfer? For aquarium water to cool you NEED to have a cooler water/air present for heat transfer to take effect.

If you have a tank of water that is 90*F and in a 90*F room with DRY air, will it evaporate? Yes, will it cool? No.

You are incorrect. I think you need to do some basic research on phase change.

When liquids "evaporate", i.e. change to a gas, they absorb energy from their surroundings to do so - in the majority of cases, (there are some strange effects at extreme cryogenic temperatures), that energy comes from latent heat, thus 90F dry air over 90F water will cool the water by extracting the phase change energy from it.

In the same way, when gas turns back to liquid, the excess energy is returned. That is why 100C steam burns are more serious then 100C water burns, as the steam condenses and releases the excess energy.

That is extremely simplistic, but summarises the situation.

You could start here.

To put a lid on this once and (hopefully) for all.... jgray152, how does a fridge work ?

You've no idea how refreshing it is to see someone accept they were wrong publically. We don't have "reputation" scoring here, but if we did, you'd have just got a +1.
