inspired by this post here- (http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=293491) i decided to have a go at hatching eggs in an aquarium too! using an aqua 40, a heat mat; a small bowl of water (to keep the aquarium humid) and a fleece blanket i put 4 chicken eggs from my hens in the blanket and placed it on top of the heat mat in the aquarium. getting the aquarium to stay around 38 degrees was at first tricky but i soon found the perfect medium. having to turn the eggs by hand every 4 hours has been a pain but im sure it'll be worth it. at 2 weeks i 'candled' the eggs and found two were fertile, two were bad, so threw the infertile ones out. sadly i broke one fertile egg two days ago, never have i felt so guilty watching a nearly fully formed chick die because of my carelessness, but i learn from my mistakes. i added 3 new eggs to the aquarium and vowed to be extra careful.
its been 20 days now since the first egg(s) were placed in the homemade incubator so (fingers crossed) tomorrow the surviving egg should start to hatch!

WOW dont forget piccies!!!

you can buy fertile quail eggs from the classifieds in things like cage and aviary birds magazine
