anyone ever seen or used one of these?
seem like a good idea, been reading more and more horror stories, overheating, glass heaters breaking and letting in water.

this is the spec from a website.

Hydor
External Thermal Heaters

Completely safe.

No danger of damage if the equipment is left running
without water for a short period of time.

Patented heating element made with the exclusive PTC system. The traditional metal resistor coils have been replaced by a special polymer sheet,
silk-screened with heating ink.

Setting of temperature controlled by an electronic circuit with indicator light.

Connectors suitable for any flexible pipe of all external filters.

Perfect running whether in vertical or horizontal position.

I just ordered a new heater and was very tempted to get one of these but the price put me off in the end.

I would also be very interested to hear peoples experiences with them.

Eddie

i googled it and they are available from the us for $18 which isnt too bad.

Typical - these are the UK prices from a good on-line supplier:

'Normal' in tank heater
Visitherm Heater/Thermostat 200w £14.99 ($26.65)
Visitherm Heater/Thermostat 300w £15.99 ($28.43)

Inline heater
Hydor ETH 200 External Heater £35.99 ($63.98)
Hydor ETH 300 External Heater £38.99 ($69.32)

Slight difference in pricing.......

Cheers, Eddie

Hmmmm, I wonder if it would be possible to make a DIY one? 2" PVC pipe, find a way to center a normal heater in the center so it can't shake, then have the water run through it? Hmmm, anybody brave enough? :)

I've seen that done scott, on here I think?

Damn!
