I have sponges that I've been using on my fluval 207 inlet tube, but now I've changed to a fluval 307 they don't fit, can anyone recommend a sponge that will fit the bigger 307 inlet tube.

What is the diameter of the strainer ?... Can't find any info that makes sense.

No idea about Fluval canisters I'm afraid, but you could take off the end and go to any local aquarium store and match up sponge sizes?
As a temporary inlet cover while you find the correct sponge you could cover the inlet with a mesh bag to stop any fish from being sucked up.

Also, have you considered one of these? I was thinking of getting something similar for my APS ef150

That looks like the one I have and can be used with a variety of sponges if the hole fits. The one I am using now is one of these:

If you have a small piece of vinyl hose to fit the outside diameter of the 307 intake, it has the options of horizontal or vertical position.

One great benefit a sponge pre-filter is I haven't had to clean or replace the internal 307 sponges since I installed it several years ago...just squeeze it out in tank water ever month or so.

Thanks for that, I will measure the diameter and see if I can get a sponge, un fortunately there are only two local fish stores in my town and none stock inlet sponges, so hopefully Amazon or eBay will have one, dead easy to buy one for my 207 filter, but seemingly not for the 307, which is bigger,

Still looking for help have measured the diameter it's 12 centimeters,I've looked on Amazon till I'm lucky in the face, can anyone help me with a sponge that will fit.

I have a fluval edge sponge on my DIY internal filter. The sponge can stretch out further too, the only issue is that the cheapest I've found was £4.99.

The inlet fitting I have on this filter is 12-16 so It could fit yours if the size is 12mm

I'm just thinking the reason I want to put a sponge on the inlet is, because I get a few bits of plants floating about which I remove. But would it matter if I just had the inlet as it came, I don't suppose bits of plants would cause a problem being sucked into the filter

Bits of plants would eventually decay in the canister over time. The main reason for a sponge on the inlet for me is to stop small fish/shrimp from being sucked up. It does also prevent larger items from being sucked up such as disturbed substrates.

I found these a couple months ago. 25% larger than the Fluval Edge and have a coarser grit at 30 ppi, they are not clogging at all. Fry and baby shrimp are safe.

Side by side with the Fluval that are always clogged:

It's a good precaution that ensure that your impeller will last for a very long time and prevent anything going up and smashing it.

I always used some, They protect the fish from being sucked in or on the strainer.

Are you sure you mean the intake tube of the filter is 12 cm - or almost 5 inches - in diameter? That's a bigger diameter than the drainpipes from our roof. Everything I can find on-line show the intake tube roughly the same width as the hoses, which are a lot less than 12 cm diameter.
