Hi all

Can anyone help me?

My Oranda has some type of infection on his Wen. I think it maybe that cotton wool type bacteria infection. One of my other Oranda is eating at the infection and has made a small hole. He does keep comming back for more and pecking at his Wen.

Kind Regards

James S

It is most likely columnaris or body fungus, however columnaris is the more common desease out of the two- it is both bacterial and fungal so needs a med that treats both (something like Pimafix would be good for this). To treat the desease successfully though and prevent it from making an appearance in the future though on your fish, you need to find the cause/s of the desease on the fish, so more info on yoru situation is needed;

a. How many gallons is the tank and what is its total stocking? How long has the tank been set up and does it have any filtration?
b. Can you test the water for ammonia, nitrites and nitrates and post the stats here?
c. Did the bullying/agressive behavior between the fish start before or after the infection?
d. How often do you clean the tank and how exactly do you go about it (water changes, cleaning substrate and filter etc) :) ?

Approx 32.8 gallons. 2 Oranda's, 1 Blackmoor and 2 regular gold fish. The tank has been set up for 2 months now, it is an uprade from a smaller tank. I have a fluval 3 plus filter.

I think the course maybe a secondary infection. 2 weeks ago my oranda and blackmoor had white spot. I used Methylene Blue to cure it.

I cant seem to test the water as yet, because it still has trace of the dye from the Mthylene Blue.

I believe the bullying started after the infection, the other oranda seems to be bitting at the infection.

I do a 25 % water change weekly, and clean the filter with tank water once a month

The infection was most likely brought on either by the stress of the whitespot or the settling into a new tank (i take it you are cycling this tank with fish or did you do a fishless cycle before moving the fish in?).

Buying a divider for the tank (which i strong advise) will help separate the sick fish from the healthy ones and help prevent anymore bullying. The whitespot is still probably present in the tank though (this parasite goes through stages of being visable to the eye and stages of not being externally visable), so you should continue to treat the goldfish for whitespot for at least another week to help prevent it from making a come back.

Increasing the amount of water changes done will help lower whitespot parasite levels in the tank and help give the fishes imune systems a bit of a break, while also enabling pristine water quality to help aid the recovery of the sick fish. I would recommend using Pimafix to treat the infection, while also adding something like an airstone to the tank will help increase oxygen levels and create a more stress-free environment while the fish are being treated :good: .

I did let the new tank cycle for about a month without any fish. I have Interpet Number 8 - Anti Fungus & finrot treatment, will this help?

I do have a airpump with air stone present in the tank.

When you cycled the tank, did you use any ammonia on it at all?
The interpet med will only treat the fungal side of the desease and not the bacterial side, Pimafix is good because it treats both internal and external bacterial infections as well as fungal ones too.

I just used stress zyme when I cylced.

I also have Interpet number 9 - Anti Internal Bacteria can I used this at the same time

No I did't use any ammonia, but I have recentley stated to used AMMO-LOCK

Ammo-Lock as in the stuff that gets rid of ammonia? If you didn't use pure ammonia in the fishless cycle, then the tank will not have been able to cycle and you tank is now currently going through a cycle with fish. Here is how you do a proper fishless cycle;

And here is new tank syndrome and the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate process explained;

No ammonia= no cycle.

You should not use ammonia removing chemicals unless your ammonia problems are severe/out of control, water changes are still much better though for removing ammonia, nitrites or ntrates either way though. If you are going through a cycle (which is highly likely), then the ammonia removal chemicals will most likely just prolong the cycle.

My Fluval 3 plus filter was already established filter from my previous tank. I also used the tank water from the previous tank for the new tank

Yes but you left the tank running with this established filter in a tank with no fish in it for a month, if the bacteria has no ammonia to survive off (which is primarily obtained from fish excrement), then it will die very quickly- all you did was kill your filter bacteria off the established sponge, and essentially just ran an empty tank with no bacteria for a month. Unfortunately, what did was basically not a fishless cycle.
When you put fish into it, the tank started to cycle again because there was an ammonia source again, however you did not know this and have not tested the water- i would not be suprised if a lot of the issues your fish have been suffering from recently are due to the stress of the cycle the tank is going through currently.
