Hello

I bought some pygmy corys several weeks ago, and at first they were very active, constantly snuffling about the tank. Now they seem much more sedate and often sit for long periods on the sand not moving, especially during the day. They then get a bit more active in the evening. I was just wondering if this was normal, as I've read that they're very active? The tank is cycled, and nitrates are low (less than five) cause I have live plants. The temp is 26 degrees which maybe a little high? But I have a male betta in there, so don't want to lower it. The pH is 7.6 which might also be a bit high for them? There are nine of them. I feed them twice a day, and they get Tetra sinking pellets, and some catfish pellets, occasional bloodworm, and occasional pea. I was wondering if fish get less active when they are fed regularly as they don't need to hunt about for food? I just want them to be happy!

Hi Lacuna :)

The behavior you have described is appropriate for the C. pygmaeus given the tank conditions. They are living in water that is at the extreme high end of the temperature scale for them and, since the tank is set up for the betta, it probably has stiller waters than would be ideal for corydoras.

I would suggest that you take extra care to keep the bottom clean and do good and frequent water changes to keep a high level of oxygen, which they need more than the betta does, in the water. :D
