I am getting a perc 120 tank with no sump......i have seen a couple of people who have built long thin shallow reugiums and put then just below the surface (almost at the surface) on the back wall of the tank (in the tank) and filled with allgae ect.

Made from black acrylic this actually looks quite neat and tidy but....

in a 100g tank what size of refugium is worth while? is a 3ft long but only 2inch by 3 inch "tank" going to hold enough to work....and how will that stuff like being at the surface and only a short distance from my 2 X 250w halides?

an example of a refugium at the back/top of the tank.

I guess it depends on the function of your refugium.
To grow a bit of macroalgae or a save haven for pods to multiply it would probably be ok (although wouldn't necessarily produce a huge amount).
As a form of filtration/nitrate removal, you probably wouldn't have enough growth to make a significant difference.

I would look at the ecosystem HOB refugiums as a size guide.
I suspect you would need more depth and width ideally.
