I'm sure many of you have heard of Barbaro, the gallant winner of the 2006 Kentucky Derby, who suffered a career ending and life threatening injury in the Preakness stakes. Well his 8 month fight for survival ended this morning, when the decision you euthanise the champion racehorse was made. It's a huge blow to the racing world, and I like many other avid fans are heartbroken by the news. This horse fought so long and so hard for survival.

...So please I ask everyone out there to just have a moment of silence for Barbaro...

...He is one of gods angels now, too precious to live. Barbaro we love you and will miss you greatly...

"So go angel of the wind and fly to heavens herd, run, run with the grace and beauty that is your essence, run, we'll meet again someday... I'll bring the apples"

"If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To told the turn long after they have gone
And so go on when nothing else is in you
Except the will that says to them hold on
If you can fill the unforgiving minutes
With 60 seconds worth of distant run
The world is yours and everything thats in it
And whats more you'll be a man my son"

RIP Bobby 2003 - Jan, 29 2007

We love you

I know, I heard this on the radio yesterday. It's so sad. He fought for so long. :(

RIP Barbaro.

Such a shame.
As a former horse owner myself,I watch horseracing quite a lot..mainly over the jumps, albeit through my fingers because of the potential for disaster.
It was a horrible injury, and I suppose in hindsight it may have been better to put him down in the beginning, but I'm glad they gave him a chance..even if it was probably mostly money (potential stud fees) orientated.
I tried to explain to my other half lastnight about it and why so many racehorses are destroyed because of injuries that almost any other animal could recover from.
Bless them all.
R.I.P Barbaro.
:(

Add another minute's silence for the thousands of racehorses who aren't fast enough and are shipped over to places like Spain, Greece and other countries from a life of luxury in well ordered stables, to be part of a live merry go round at a funfair, or used to pull carts or who end up in the continental meat markets, being transported crammed into lorries, and hauled terrified into slaughter houses at the other end and shot. At least their life was short and unpleasant, whereas the live merry go round horses live for years sufferring terribly. Horse racing, like dog racing, is a filthy business, based on money.

*For once, agrees totally with Fenwoman*

I'll think of him, and have a minutes silence, but I'll also then think of the bar stewards that did this to him - and the next minute will be full of expletives. No sympathy for the horse racing world, only the horses.

If only most of them were shot.. im guessing you havent watched a horse slaughtering video.. or maybe you have.. i dont know, but the one I have seen, they werent shot.. ok enough sadness..

RIP Barbaro

I do love race horses... beautiful creatures that are exploited by rich people...

Lost a great animal and I bet someone is more mad because they lost a few bucks...

When animals are constantly bred and pushed and further refined for extreme performance, something's got to give. We want them to go faster and faster, why can't we just let well enough alone? Horses are plenty fast already. I felt sorry for Barbaro, I watched the race on TV and cringed when he broke his leg. I fully expected him to be euthanized then and there, perhaps that would have been better; his 8 month ordeal must have been terrible. He had a lot of courage and spunk, and I was pulling for him, but I just knew in my gut that it wouldn't work out.

RIP, Barbaro.

The thing people are doing now is racing larger horses because of the power and speed they can put out, but overlooking the fact that they are soooooo much harder on their buddies with that extra pounds. It is sad, I love the animals, but hate the sport.

Yes I aggree, its terrible.

Also, they suffer extreme pain with shin splints (pain up the shin) from the minute they start racing from a young age, but are still forced to train every morning at 5am in excrucitating pain, just to entertain and earn people some cash.

Its a cruel, I dont go to the races, dont watch the race, dont support the races, as I dont go to circus' for the same reason.
