In interest, are goldfish (the fancy ones celestial, bubble eye etc), the same as tropical fish in that they grow to the size of their tank. In easy terms, can a goldfish keep growing to their full potential even with a reasonably small tank (say 6 gals). I heard this in the pinned topic "Goldfish in tanks, what you should know". It stated that, 'goldfish will not grow to its environment. Its' body may, however the internal organs will not'. Is this true? Can someone further explain this? Thankyou.

I've heard you should keep goldfish in NOTHING less Than a 30 Gallon.
I know it sounds crazy, but think of how big they get

Yup. My uncle, has two gold fish, and they are hugeeeee! Never seen em that big, I mean it, they are like over a foot long!

I wrote the topic you referenced.
yes it is true, the result is a stunted fish that
will die a painful death early in its life.

when people say "i had a goldfish in a bowl for 4 years and he was happy"
I always reply "well 4 years out of a 40year lifespan is not good is it!"

The reason goldfish need so much water is due to the amount of waste that they produce. It has been estimated that over 90% of a goldfishes waste is ammonia/ammonium. both of which are highly toxic and can lead to burns on the skin, erroded gills and if not dealt with death.
