Im Trying To Change My Adf's Staple Diet To Pellets

I received some of ZooMeds Frog and Tadpole micro pellets to replace their staple diet of frozen bloodworms a couple days ago, along with a dish for them.

I've put the dish in the tank for the frogs along with some pellets, but they either dont seem interested or have no idea that there is food there or if it is food, which i realise they have do have to discover for themselves, but i guess im just looking for some advice about it.

So really, my question is just if anyone has experienced such a change in an ADF's staple diet and if there are any tips or things i can do to help introduce the pellets.

i feed mine reptomin, and it still takes them a while for them to notice there's food in the tank. Using a long handled tongs and waving the food about a bit, as if it were alive is a sure way to get my adfs interested. I'm not sure if the micro pellets are small enough to do that. If not you could use a baster to gently move the pellets about in front of your frogs.

Mmm i was just thinking about trying reptomin next, perhaps these pellets arnt tasty enough. One of my frogs went for one of the pellets and didnt seem too impressed lol.

Yeah, that seems like a good idea, ive been doing that with the bloodworms and thats worked well. I'll try that next, these micro pellets are tiny so maybe some chopped reptomin being waved around infront of them might get them going haha.

no prob, i break the reptomin up then soak it for a while, you need to hold it underwater and squeeze it to get the air out so it'll sink. i break each stick up into 4-6 bits, my frogs would happily choke themselves trying to swallow a whole or half stick

my ADFs adore frozen Krill - I defrost it in an eggcup of their tank water then put it under the moss ball that they all seem to congregate under. It's like a mini forest & the fish can't get to their food so quickly.

I'm going to buy some Reptomin too tomorrow. I also have those micro pellets & I'm not sure they're eating them either.

I've just bought 4 more ADFs this morning, so now I have 8 - I love them.

Mm, its odd, perhaps they just arnt very appetising to the frogs.

They're great arnt they! I think i could easily get 1 or 2 more ADF's for my tank as theres still loads of room. Do you know if they get on okay if you try introducing younger newbies?

i added a few more to mine when i started without any problems (touch wood) but it's good practice to quarantine any new frogs for 3 months to make sure they aren't infected with Chytrid Fungus.

Hi - the frozen Krill I get is in a big slab with shrimps & all sorts in it, its brill. The frogs are adorable I could quite easily fill my tank with them in it only to tell the truth. I've no idea how the 4 resident ADFs will react with the 4 newbies but I don't think they'd be a problem.

yeh me neither, I only learnt about it afterwards I actually bought a couple ACF's for my parents back in December and kept them in the same bucket I use for water changes, for a couple of days before I travelled up north to my parents house. I was really worried I might not have sterilised everything properly afterwards. fingers and toes crossed my frogs are ok, it doesn't seem to be so bad in the UK, and the shop I got my frogs from doesn't keep ACF and ADF in the same tank. I've been meaning to PM one of the mods here to add something like this to the sticky on the forum here.

My LFS keeps them separate too thank goodness. They all looked healthy to me but then I don't know what I'd be looking for even if I'd known about it.

It'd be a good idea to pm a mod

Yeah, i guess as ADF's are far from aggressive and are not territorial, they dont have a hierarchy within a group for new frogs to try and fit into... Maybe lol.

Jeez, well im very glad the shop i got my ADF's from doesnt keep them in tank with ACF's either.

At least chytrid fungus is treatable, though i will be inspecting every frog in the shop for symptoms if i do look for some more lol.

I agree with that, more people should be aware of the fungus. Having some information about it pinned to this section would be very handy to read up on.

Did you manage to get some reptomin today? I found some after looking in most of the local pet shops, but only 2 of the frogs seem to like it, the other 2 just taste it and spit it back out. Hopefully its just because they arnt used to it.

LOL they certainly seem to be - I also bought some Reptomin - god isn't it hard to feed !! I soaked it then lowered it into the water to roughly where they were but it all fell apart & floated away. I don't know if they got any but the Phantoms liked it. I dropped a bit of Krill in & oh boy did the frogs go for that. One little frog did a sort of stand off surrounded by the 4 Platys. He got hold of the krill in his mouth & wouldn't let go - showed no fear of the fish at all. I took a couple of pics which I'll post tomorrow.

Haha brilliant, how courageous! They do seem very determined when it comes to their food haha.

But yessss, i found that too, its rather frustrating lol. I bought some Daphnia, without realising quite how small they are, so ive had them flying around my tank along with bits of reptomin today lol.. I'll be treating my frogs with krill soon too, as your having so much success with it
