Okay, I'm moving today..It's only about 5 blocks down and five blocks over from where I live now. I was thinking that I could just put my fishies, along with some existing tank water, in a bucket and drive it over to my new house and them put the fish along with the water back in the tank so the fish would still have some good bacteria. Would this work? Do you have any other suggestions??

Sounds good, but....you're just now worrying about this? I'd of been stressing over moving my fish for weeks before the move

You could also use a rubbermaid rectangle storing type container (huge!). Put your fish in it and hook up the filter while you set up the tank.

how i did it

yesterday we went to lfs got 6 bags and went straight back mine (the fish were not fed on wednesday night as id heard this was a good thing) we took all the things out the tank, plants went in one bag, rocks an bogwood went into a bucket with some water on it, filter also went into a bag with water to keep it wet (yes tank water)
next came the fish, the fighters went into one bag(4 females 1 male),
the swordtails went into another bag (1 male 3 females)
my albino plec went into another bag, and the two frogs went into yet another bag.
we then got my old breeders box and slotted them in hopeing that it might retain the heat... we wrapped an old towle around it for the same reason.
i then emptyed the tank of 95% of its water leavein 5% in to cover the gravel.
placed it all in her car and made sure that her heating was at the right level to keep the car nice an warm (even tho it was only a 15 min drive away lol)

after we got it all into her house we added warm water to the breeders box to make sure the temp stayed constant whilst we were sorting her tank out.
declorinated water added to the tank and a thousand other things later (all in all an hrs job) we placed the fish (still in bags) inside her tank an left them for 15 mins.
we then emptyed the bags (with water as it was my old tank water an her ph is the same as mine) into the newly setup but mature tank. after it had settled down a bit (was a bit cloudy for the first 30mins) everythin looked just the same as it did when it was in my house....

hth

5 gallon buckets work well for this and if you are only gonna do a 10 block move just make sure your fish get set up first. I moved from Portland Or to Mesa AZ using that with plants for Oxygen. Alas I was unwise to carry both buckets on the floor board of the moving van and the buckets were next to the engine block and as a result none of my poor fishies made the journey. In the future I will do plants as well as one of those portable air pumps and water changes along the way.

But 10 blocks? you will be fine. Happy moving.

P.S. Don't forget the lids for the buckets :fun:
