I'm BACK

In the time I've been here, I've seen your occasional postings and really appreciated them.

I never got to know Byron as a person, but as a person who shared knowledge on fish, he's really missed. He was a big, positive presence on this forum.

And now, I'm glad to see you're back.

Welcome back Abbeysdad.
What do you mean by you were hacked. Did you forget your original password?
I was using Chrome as my browser. While in Facebook I saw someone had messaged me. As soon as I clicked on it I got a screen indicating there was a security breach so Microsoft locked my pc. It looked legit but it clearly was a scam to get me to call a bogus support number and who knows what would happen next. Of course I didn't call the number! In the process of purging infected Chrome and switching to Firefox, I lost all of my password information. With so many accounts and passwords I tried a recovery here, but must have used an old email I didn't remember so recovery failed and I had to re-register a new account.

Ya, I've seen that scam. They do it over the phone too.

had that same scam on my wife's desktop 2 days ago. I just turned the power strip off and it never affected anything.

It won't actually cause harm. You don't even have to shut down the system, at least not a Windows system. Just hit Alt/Crtl/Del and select Task Manager. In Task Manager you can force a shutdown of the web browser. Even though the false warnings don't look like it they are still browser windows.
