Got back from my 9 day trip. One cory died in my 5 gallon, and my oldest betta (4 years old) has a little bit of fungus on his tail. Otherwise, everybody else is fine. The guppy fry are big enough to be moved and one of my goldfish lost the black spots on his body, he looks funny now! LoL. Budgies are a little bit on the fat side, and my cockatiel is still sick :/ But thats not new, she's been sick for months now.

So, about Ruby, my red VT. He has a bit of fungus hanging off his tail. I'll seperate him tonight and buy meds tommorow...but what should I use? Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Welcome back try a salt bath on him add some salt to his bowl, salt bath one tablespoon to a gal, bowl one teaspoon to a gal, is it bad, and does if look fluffy.

If it is a true fungus, ich medications that contain malachite green work wonders. I have used numerous kinds with great success.

It looks like he ripped it or something and now fungus is starting to grow on the very tip of his fin, its barely there. I'll read up on the salt bath thing.

I'm moving him to a 1 gallon tank, will 1 teaspoon of salt be enough?

Edit: I moved him, and the fungus fell off  I'll still keep him in there for awhile though, just incase. I used 1 teaspoon of salt.

im not sure. i thought it was 1 tbl spoon. but i would read up on it nun the less

Watch him for signs of stress. My box of salt says to add one tablespoon(15 ml) for 5G. That translates into 3ml for 1G. As a teaspoon is 5ml it maybe too much salt. I only ever use salt to treat ich, and then I am not following the directions, I add 3 times the recommended dosage. I am sure he will be fine, but if you see he is getting stressed I would give him a water change to bring down the salt levels. Did you dissolve the salt in tank water before putting him in?

(yes I did dissolve the salt before putting him in)

The fungus on that one fin didn't come back, but now there is a little bit on the end of his other fin AND there's this long white string of it on one of his ventral fin! So I'm guessing the salt isn't working. So what medication should I use? I know you guys said use any fungus treatment but what one have you tried and have had success with it? Its just that I've tried a few and they never worked (example: pimafix). My lfs doesn't have the greatest selection, either.

Yeah, just stay away from the Fixes... they don't work that great.

Get yourself some Jungle Fungus Clear tabs or another medication that treats fungus. I've found the tabs work great, though. Walmart even carries them, so you should be able to find them.

Any medication containing malachite green will work. I have used Maracide, Super Ich Plus and Nox-Ich, both with success. One of my boys got the white stringy thing that you described. One dose of Nox-Ich and it was gone.

Keep us updated. Glad to know you dissolved the salt, my first time using it I dumped it into my 55G. That was probably my worst newbie mistake.
